They decided to move inland where
their gardens were, where they were
safe from crashing waves. It was
hard to adjust to a new place to live.
Everyone was very sad to leave their
beach home.
My mother remembers that two
missionaries helped her family a lot.
Their names were John and Bonnie
Nystrom, and they had moved to Arop
several years before the waves washed
away the village. John and Bonnie
had come to learn the Arop language,
create an alphabet, and help translate
the Bible! They taught people to read
using the alphabet.
Many years later, I was born. Now I’m
eight years old. The Arop people have
made their new village a home. They
still miss the beach sometimes, but
they can tell you stories about what
life used to be like. And many people
are excited because they’ve learned to
read and write. Most importantly we’ve
learned about Jesus! God has taught
us that even when there are big waves
in life, He is bigger than the waves, and
we can trust in Him for everything.

My mother was very excited, and so
were many people in the village! Now
they could learn to read and write, and
share stories about the big waves!
